Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild occupies one of the most spectacular sites

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild occupies one of the most spectacular sites on the French Riviera. Set on the narrow Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, with sea visible on both sides, the villa is surrounded by nine themed gardens that vary from formal French design to rose gardens, exotic plantings, stone terracing and framed views across the Mediterranean towards Cap d'Ail.

The gardens were created by Béatrice de Rothschild between 1905 and 1912 as a setting for her villa and her collecting. They reflect both the Riviera's remarkable climate — which allows plants from subtropical and Mediterranean regions around the world to thrive — and the Belle Époque taste for theatrical variety, romantic atmosphere and the deliberate combination of nature and artifice.

For garden travellers, Villa Ephrussi shows the French Riviera as a garden culture shaped by wealth, travel, botany and a particular coastal light. Each of the themed gardens creates a distinct mood. The sequence — from the formal French garden and its dolphin-fountain water features to the Japanese garden, the rose garden and the exotic collection — rewards a slow and attentive circuit.
