One of the defining horticultural spectacles of spring

Keukenhof, near Lisse in the heart of the Bollenstreek, is one of the defining horticultural spectacles of spring. Open for only around eight weeks each year, it presents millions of bulbs — tulips, narcissus, hyacinths, alliums, fritillaries and more — across a designed parkland of 32 hectares. For garden travellers, it is important not only because of its scale, but because of what it reveals about Dutch bulb culture at its most ambitious and controlled.

Keukenhof is an exhibition garden in the fullest sense. Dutch growers, breeders and designers use it to demonstrate what bulbs can achieve when handled with exceptional craft and intention. Colour is planned across the whole season; succession plantings ensure that the display changes week by week. The result is less like a field and more like a very large outdoor gallery — seasonal, precise and highly managed.

A visit to Keukenhof gains greatly from context. Understanding what you are looking at — the relationship between variety, soil, drainage, succession timing and colour composition — transforms the experience from awe at scale to genuine horticultural understanding. Our tour leader provides exactly this kind of guidance throughout.
