Cerney House Gardens surrounds a Regency manor in the village of North C

Cerney House Gardens surrounds a Regency manor in the village of North Cerney, a few miles north of Cirencester in the North Cotswolds. The garden has been in the care of the same family for several generations and has the relaxed, personal quality that private ownership over time tends to produce. It is not a garden of grand gestures or ambitious plantings, but one of quiet beauty and careful attention.

The walled kitchen garden is the heart of the property — a working productive garden that also serves as the main ornamental space, with deep herbaceous borders and a herb garden of considerable character lining the walls. The grounds around the house include a dell planted with spring bulbs, a rose garden and a terrace that looks out over the surrounding Cotswold countryside.

We visit Cerney on our Cotswolds tour as one of several private gardens in the itinerary — gardens that are not always open to the general public and that offer an experience quite different from the major National Trust properties. The combination of the private garden's intimacy with the grandeur of Hidcote and Kiftsgate later in the same week makes for a rich and varied programme.
